Moving to Calgary from Ontario | Complete Relocation Guide
Over the past several years, thousands of families have made the move from Ontario to Alberta in search of a better balance between career opportunities, lifestyle, and housing affordability. Calgary has become one of the most popular destinations for relocation thanks to its strong economy, proximity to the Rocky Mountains, and significantly lower housing costs compared to cities like Toronto.
For many people, the decision to move across provinces is exciting; but it can also feel overwhelming. Questions about housing, schools, neighbourhoods, employment, and cost of living are often top of mind.
As a Calgary REALTOR® who has personally relocated between provinces, I work with many families making the move from Ontario to Calgary. My goal is to help make the transition as smooth as possible so you can feel confident about your decision and excited about your new home.
Relocating to Calgary
Housing Affordability
One of the biggest differences people notice immediately is the cost of housing.
In many Ontario cities, detached homes can easily exceed $1.2–$1.5 million, while in Calgary the benchmark price for a detached home is significantly lower. Buyers are often surprised by how much more space, newer construction, and larger lots they can afford in Calgary.
For many families, relocating west means the opportunity to purchase a detached home rather than a townhouse or condo.
Lower Taxes
Alberta has several tax advantages compared to Ontario.
-
No provincial sales tax (PST)
-
Lower overall tax burden for many households
-
Competitive corporate tax environment
While individual circumstances vary, many families find their overall cost of living decreases after relocating.

Moving from Ontario to Alberta: What do I need to know
Moving from Ontario to Calgary is exciting, but there are a few important administrative steps to take once you arrive in Alberta. Along with finding the right home and getting settled into your new community, you will want to update your provincial documents, vehicle information, health coverage, and everyday accounts.
Here is a helpful checklist for new Calgary residents moving from Ontario:
1. Apply for Your Alberta Health Care Card
Once you establish residency in Alberta, apply for coverage through the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan, also known as AHCIP. You do not technically “transfer” your Ontario health card; instead, you apply for Alberta coverage.
You will typically need documents that prove your identity, legal entitlement to be in Canada, and Alberta residency. It is a good idea to apply as soon as possible after moving so there are no delays if you need medical care.
2. Transfer Your Ontario Driver’s Licence
If you are moving to Alberta permanently, you will need to exchange your Ontario driver’s licence for an Alberta driver’s licence. This can usually be done at an Alberta registry office.
Bring your Ontario licence, accepted identification, and proof of Alberta residency. Once your Alberta licence is issued, your Ontario licence will no longer be valid.
3. Update Your Vehicle Registration and Insurance
If you bring a vehicle from Ontario, you will need to register it in Alberta and arrange Alberta auto insurance. Before your vehicle can be registered, it may need an out of province inspection to confirm it meets Alberta safety standards.
It is wise to contact an Alberta insurance provider before you arrive so you understand your options and can avoid gaps in coverage.
4. Complete an Out of Province Vehicle Inspection
Many vehicles coming from Ontario require an out of province inspection before they can be registered in Alberta. The inspection must be completed at a licensed inspection facility.
If repairs are required, they may need to be completed before the vehicle can pass inspection and be registered. Budgeting for this step ahead of time can help avoid surprises.
5. Update Your Address with Important Providers
After you move, update your address with banks, credit cards, insurance providers, CRA, your employer, subscriptions, professional associations, and any other important accounts.
Do not forget to arrange mail forwarding through Canada Post so you do not miss important documents during the transition.
6. Register Children for School
If you are moving with children, research Calgary school options early. Calgary has public, Catholic, private, charter, French immersion, Christian, and alternative school options, depending on your child’s needs and your new home address.
Your designated school may depend on your Calgary community, so school planning and home shopping often go hand in hand.
7. Find New Health and Family Services
Once you are settled, start looking for a family doctor, dentist, optometrist, pharmacy, and any specialists or support services your family may need. It can be helpful to transfer medical records, prescriptions, and immunization records from Ontario before or shortly after your move.
8. Set Up Utilities and Home Services
Before possession day, arrange utilities, internet, home insurance, waste/recycling information, and any community association or condo related details. If you are moving into a condo or townhouse, review move-in rules, elevator bookings, parking instructions, and bylaws.
9. Learn About Calgary Roads, Weather, and Winter Driving
Calgary winters can feel different from Ontario winters, especially with Chinooks, freeze thaw cycles, and changing road conditions. Winter tires are strongly recommended, even though they are not legally required in Alberta for most vehicles.
It is also helpful to learn major Calgary routes, including Stoney Trail, Deerfoot Trail, Crowchild Trail, Glenmore Trail, and Sarcee Trail.
10. Explore Your New Community
One of the best parts of moving to Calgary is discovering the city’s communities, parks, pathways, recreation centres, schools, restaurants, and nearby mountain access. Take time to explore your new neighbourhood and surrounding areas so Calgary starts to feel like home.
Whether you are moving from Toronto, Ottawa, London, Kingston, Hamilton, or a smaller Ontario community, Calgary offers a wide range of neighbourhoods, lifestyles, and housing options.

If you are moving to Alberta permanently, you must exchange your Ontario driver’s license for an Alberta license within 90 days of establishing residency.
