What You Need to Know About Moving from Ontario to Calgary, Alberta

The move from Ontario can be an exciting fresh start. Whether you move to Calgary or one of its surrounding areas such as Airdrie, Cochrane and Okatoks, there are countless opportunities available to you. As you begin to think about career possibilities, affordable housing and a clear view of the Rockies, there are a few things to do that will be essential in making a smooth transition out west.

To prepare for your move and set up your new life here in Alberta, here are some helpful things to consider:

1. Have a Job (or Income Source) Lined Up Before You Arrive

One of the most important things to know before moving from Ontario to Alberta is that most lenders won’t approve a mortgage unless you have verifiable employment or sufficient cash savings. Here are some other reasons to secure work before the move. Even if you plan to buy a home soon after arriving, you’ll need to show proof of income from a local employer or a transferable position.

If you’re job hunting, try to secure employment before you move. Many Calgary employers will consider out-of-province candidates, especially if you can demonstrate your relocation plans are already underway. You can also increase your chances of getting a callback by changing your phone number to a local Alberta area code, such as 403 or 587. It may sound small, but it shows employers that you’re serious about settling here.

2. Consider Short-Term Housing First

You may feel pressured to buy or sign a one-year lease right away, but consider a short term rental. Furnished rentals, Airbnb options, or month-to-month leases can give you valuable breathing room as you get familiar with the area during those first few months.

This flexibility allows you to explore Calgary’s many diverse communities—and the surrounding towns of Cochrane, Airdrie, and Okotoks—before committing to a long-term home. Each area has its own charm: Cochrane offers small-town character with mountain views, Airdrie has a family-friendly vibe with quick access to Calgary and Okotoks blends scenic living with modern amenities.

3. Sell or Donate What You Can Before You Move

The cost of shipping a household across Canada can add up quickly. Many people moving from Ontario to Alberta find it more cost-effective to sell or donate larger furniture and non-essential items before the move.

Think of it as a fresh start: less clutter, less cost, and fewer boxes to unpack on arrival. Focus on bringing only your essentials, sentimental items, and anything that would be expensive to replace once you arrive.

Try to compare prices from professional moving companies or even rent a portable moving container service, which gives you extra flexibility. Here is a list of moving and shipping companies you can contact

4. Registering Your Out-of-Province Vehicle

Within 90 days of living in Alberta, you’ll need to register your vehicle. The process includes an Out-of-Province Vehicle Inspection, which must be completed by a licensed mechanic. Once your car passes inspection, you can register it and get your Alberta plates.

You’ll also need Alberta auto insurance, so it’s a good idea to contact a local insurance broker to compare rates. Alberta’s insurance structure is different from Ontario’s, so many people find their premiums go down after moving.

5. Changing Your Driver’s License and Address

Just like your vehicle registration, you’ll need to exchange your Ontario driver’s license for an Alberta one within 90 days of becoming a resident. This is typically a quick process at any Alberta Registry office. All you need is your Ontario license and proof of residency.

If you’re still between addresses or haven’t secured your long-term home yet, consider getting a P.O. box for your mail. This ensures you don’t miss important correspondence like your health care documents or vehicle registration papers while you’re in transition.

6. Health Care: Apply for Your Alberta Health Card

Healthcare coverage is another important item to check off your list early. You’ll need to apply for an Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) card within 90 days of moving. Until the 90 day mark, you can still use your Ontario health card for medical appointments.

To register for ACHIP, you’ll need proof of identity, residency, and legal entitlement to be in Canada (You might bring your driver’s license, lease agreement and passport). Alberta’s healthcare system offers comprehensive coverage and you’ll find family doctors and clinics throughout Calgary and the surrounding towns.

7. Setting Up Utilities, Internet, and Services

Once you’ve found a place to live, your next step is setting up the essentials: electricity, gas, water, internet, and waste collection. In Calgary, services like Enmax and ATCO handle many of these utilities. Smaller communities like Cochrane, Airdrie and Okotoks have their own local providers, and most offer easy online setup forms.

It’s also a good idea to set up your internet and mobile service early, especially if you’re working remotely or need reliable connectivity for job searching. Many people choose to update their cell number to a local Alberta number, because doing so can make everyday communication smoother when dealing with employers, banks, and local businesses.

8. Take Time to Explore Before You Buy

Once you’ve settled the logistics, take some time to explore your new surroundings! Whether you’re grabbing coffee in Kensington, hiking in Bragg Creek or spending a Saturday in Canmore, Calgary is a city that truly blends urban energy with outdoor adventure.
