- Choosing the Right School in Calgary: What Families Need to Know Before Moving
If you’re planning a move to Calgary, one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your family is choosing the right school and neighbourhood. While Calgary offers a wide variety of public, Catholic, and alternative education options, it’s crucial to do your research in advance — because many schools in the city are currently at or near capacity, and your child may not be placed in the school you initially expect.
From school boundaries and program options to transportation and early dismissal days, there’s a lot to consider. Here’s what you need to know about Calgary’s school system — and how to navigate it successfully during your relocation.
1. School Capacity: Why You Can’t Just Pick a School
Calgary has grown significantly in recent years, and as a result, many schools in popular neighbourhoods are full or near capacity. Even if a school is the designated one for your address, there’s no guarantee that it has space for your child — especially if you’re registering after the school year has started or transferring mid-year.
In such cases, your child may be redirected to a different school outside your community — sometimes with bussing provided. That’s why it’s essential to consider school availability when choosing your neighbourhood, not just proximity.

You can use the CBE’s School Finder Tool to determine which schools serve a specific address:

This tool is an excellent starting point, but remember — capacity limitations still apply.
2. Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD)
If you’re considering Catholic education, Calgary also offers a robust network of schools through the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD). These schools typically require proof of baptism for at least one parent or child and may also face space constraints depending on the neighbourhood.

3. Palliser School Division: A Unique Alternative
The Palliser School Division offers an alternative to traditional public or Catholic schooling. This division serves a wider geographic area, including Calgary, and is well-known for its faith-based, alternative, and online education options.
Some of the programs available through Palliser include:
- Heritage Christian Academy (faith-based)
- Master’s Academy & College (innovative learning model)
- Calgary Islamic School
- Home Education and Online Learning options
Palliser schools are often a hidden gem for families looking for specialized programming or smaller school communities.

4. School Transportation in Calgary
Transportation is another key consideration when selecting a school and neighbourhood. Depending on your school and location, your child may:
- Walk to school (especially common in established neighbourhoods with community schools)
- Take yellow school buses (primarily for CBE and CCSD elementary students)
- Use Calgary Transit (common for junior high and high school students)
- Be driven by parents or join a carpool
It’s important to note that school bus routes and eligibility are tied to school boundaries and can vary significantly depending on the division and school. In many cases, transportation fees apply, so it’s worth budgeting for those costs.
5. Condensed School Weeks & Early Dismissal Fridays
Another important feature of many Calgary schools is the early dismissal on Fridays. Several schools operate on a condensed school week, meaning students are dismissed earlier (often around noon or 1:00 p.m.) on Fridays to allow for teacher collaboration and planning time.
This is particularly common in CBE schools and something you’ll want to consider when arranging childcare or work schedules.
6. Choosing Your Community Based on School Needs
